Portland Hill is an independent asset manager founded in 2011 by Thierry Lucas (ex Eton Park). The firm employs 20 employees (1/3rd of which are investment professionals) and currently manages over $500m across fundamentally driven equity long short strategies. The UCITS version of Portland Hill’s flagship strategy launched in September 2014. It is a directional, equity long short strategy that invests globally (predominately in Europe) with a fundamental bottom-up catalyst driven approach (soft to hard catalyst situations - no merger arb), with a focus on under-researched, off-the-beaten path opportunities in the mid-cap equity space (typically representing at least 50% of the portfolio). Stock selection is driven by the team’s deep dive fundamental due diligence of target companies which is backed by both qualitative and quantitative analyses. Furthermore, ESG principles have been fully integrated into the investment process since early 2019. While the strategy has the flexibility to invest across all sectors, the team has developed over time an expertise across five core areas (Business Services, Consumer, Health Care & Chemicals, Financials and TMT) which are often overrepresented in the portfolio. The final portfolio is relatively concentrated, with the top 5 long ideas typically representing over 30% of NAV.
